Cyclone Nargis caused the worst natural disaster in the recorded history of Myanmar in May, 2008. There were at least 138,373 fatalities leaving many children orphaned and homeless.
Hope Children’s Home provides shelter for 10-15 children. Originally the home was renting a property in the area but faced closure due to crippling rent increases. OzBurma/New Peninsula Baptist Church purchased some land nearby and provided funds for the construction of a two story dwelling which was supervised by our Myanmar partners. OzBurma also provided a water pump in 2018 and built the shop at the front so they would have an income to help support the home. A sewing machine, rice and essential food and toiletries were also provided.
Agape is situated in an isolated area and has no support from any other mission teams. It is a privately owned children’s home housing 35 children. It is over 10 years old. The house parent struggles to care for the mainly orphaned children. When OzBurma first visited it was very small and crowded with the girls sharing one small room and the boys another. Oz Burma provided the funds to build a second story as well as a new kitchen and toilet. The team has visited each year delivering much needed rice and other food supplies, mattresses and other necessities. In 2012 the team took all of the children to the zoo. For many of them it was their first ride on a bus!
